What to Do / Eat in Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The Heineken Experience – Like Guinness in Ireland, Heineken turned an old brewery into a tourist attraction.  It’s not the most interesting thing ever, but I can think of worse ways to spend a couple of hours.  Plus: beer!

Kroket – I tried kroket — a tasty deep-fried tube that’s a specialty in Amsterdam — from a couple of different places.

McDonald’s – I tried one thing at McDonald’s in Amsterdam: McKroket, a decent croquette sandwich.

Original Stroopwafels – I had a fresh stroopwafel from a street vendor in Amsterdam, and it haunts my dreams to this day.  It’s so damn good.

Tokoman – Thanks to its colonialist history, there’s a bunch of Surinamese food to be found in Amsterdam — including something called a pom sandwich, that looks a lot better than it tastes.

Vleminckx Sausmeesters – This place specializes in delicious French fries with various toppings.  Their specialty: oorlog mix, which comes with mayo, satay sauce, and onions.

Winkel 43 – The apple pie at Winkel 43 is somewhere between a pie and a cake.  It’s delicious.
