I recently had a layover in the Oman airport, and I noticed that they have a McDonald’s location in their food court. I wasn’t even particularly hungry, but I mean, obviously. Bonus McDonald’s Around the World post? Don’t mind if I do!
I tried a couple of things. The first was called the McArabia: a flatbread sandwich featuring two chicken burger patties, lettuce, tomato, onions, and garlic sauce.
It was a big, fat shrug. It was fine, I guess; it was inoffensive enough. But nothing about it particularly stood out.
The flatbread itself was probably the biggest offender. It was cold and dry. A light toasting would have helped, but I think it was a bit stale.
The chicken patties were also dry, but they were fine, I guess. They had a decent enough flavour.
The garlic sauce was pretty bland. If the sauce had been great it might have brought the sandwich together, but it had a neither here nor there flavour that didn’t add up to a whole lot.
The second thing I tried were the Jalapeno Bites. They weren’t much better than the McArabia. They basically tasted like jalapeno poppers, but with Cheez Wiz instead of cream cheese, and with a disappointingly mild level of spice.
These probably would have been better if they had been hot and fresh, but they were pretty clammy. Still, they kinda grew on me. I should note, however, that they were extremely similar (and possibly identical?) to the Chili Cheese Tops I tried in McDonald’s Sweden.
