There’s a popular breakfast in Budapest called langos — fried bread, traditionally topped with sour cream and cheese.
A vendor at the back of the Rákóczi Market Hall called JóKrisz Lángos Sütöde serves these things, and man, they’re good.
The Rákóczi Market Hall is probably worth visiting regardless — it’s a really interesting market that, unlike the Central Market Hall, doesn’t feel touristy in the slightest.
I ordered the classic sajtos tejfolos langos, which comes topped with the aforementioned sour cream and cheese.
Man, it was good. Did I mention that already? Because it was so damn good.
It kind of reminded me of a BeaverTail, but like a hundred times better. Or maybe a thousand times better? A million times better??
It’s super delicious, is what I’m saying.
It’s so, so satisfying, with a delicately crispy exterior and a fluffy, slightly chewy interior. It’s greasy, but just the right amount of greasy. It’s great.
The sour cream and cheese are the perfect topping, with the sour cream adding a slight tang, and the mozzarella-esque cheese getting a little bit melty from the freshly fried langos. It also had a very mild garlicky hit — I think maybe the sour cream was lightly seasoned?
It was an absolutely exceptional breakfast. If you’re in Budapest, you need to eat this.
Location: Budapest, Rákóczi tér, 1084 Hungary
How to find it: It’s in the back corner of the market.
