What to Do / Eat in Kaohsiung, Taiwan

DO

Cijin Island – This scenic island is a quick and easy ferry ride from Kaohsiung, and makes for a great day trip.

Fo Guang Shan – There are some amazing sights to see at Fo Guang Shan, including the world’s tallest bronze Buddha statue.  Just make sure it’s open when you go.

Lotus Pond – The colourful temples and pagodas that surround Lotus Pond are pretty fascinating to see.

Morning Market – If you want to get an idea of what a morning market in Taiwan is like, watch this video walkthrough.

EAT

Dan Dan Hamburger – This is a local fast food chain, and the food is surprisingly good.

Duck Zhen – The duck rice at Duck Zhen is insanely good.  Don’t miss it.

Gao Xiong Po Po Shaved Ice – If you like mango, the mango shaved ice at this place is a must-order.

Gang Yuan Beef Noodle Restaurant – Gang Yuan sells a soupless version of beef noodle soup.  It’s tasty, but I kinda missed the soup.

Lingya Night Market – I tried some sweet fried dough at this night market, and yeah, it was quite good.

Liuhe Night Market – No matter what you’re craving, you’ll probably find it at the Liuhe Night Market.

McDonald’s – Delicious food is cheap and abundant in Taiwan.  Please don’t go to McDonald’s here; it’s not good.

Self-Serve Breakfast – You can just grab what you want here, which is easy, and everything I tried was quite delicious.

Wu Pao Chun Bakery – This is an extremely highly-regarded bakery that sells French-inspired pastries.

Yu Xiang Mei Shi – If you’re looking for a tasty meal near Lotus Pond, this place has some fantastic noodles.
