What to Do / Eat in Tainan, Taiwan

DO

Anping Fort – This is one of those places you pretty much have to check out as a tourist.  It’s cheap, interesting, and scenic.

Black Bridge Sausage Museum – I mean, it’s a whole museum dedicated to sausage.  It’s free, so why not?  You do, however, have to pay to try their sausage if you get hungry after checking it out, and trust me — you’re going to get hungry after checking it out.

EAT

Ah Cun Beef Soup – The beef soup at Ah Cun Beef Soup has a profoundly beefy flavour; it’s so good.

Ah Song Gua Bao – The pork buns from this place were a bit sweet for my taste, but they were still pretty good.

Ah Tang – Ah Tang serves a delicious bowl of milkfish porridge; it might seem like an intense thing to eat for breakfast, but it’s absolutely delicious.

A Jiang Stir-Fried Eel Noodles – Eel noodles are a Tainan specialty, and A Jiang Stir-Fried Eel Noodles is the best place to get them.

Anping Fort Coffin Toast – Coffin Toast is a deep-fried piece of bread that’s filled with a creamy soup.  Yeah, it’s good.

Chicken House – I wasn’t crazy about the fried chicken from this place — but it’s extremely popular, that’s for sure.

Chih Kan Dan Zai Noodles – This place sells something called dan zai noodles, which are a garlicky explosion of flavour.

Chung’s Oyster Fritter – The oyster fritter from this street food stall is a big ball of deep fried goodness.

Huang Huo Mu Old Taiwan Flavor Ice Shop – Shaved ice is good.  Pudding is good.  What happens when you combine those things?  Check this place out and find out (spoiler alert: it’s delicious).

Kintoku – Kintoku sells run bing, which is essentially a Taiwanese burrito.  It’s a great snack.

Liu Chia – If you’re looking for zhongzi — stuffed glutinous rice balls — Liu Chia is the place to go.

Millet Doughnut – Millet doughnuts are crispy, chewy, and delicious.  It’s a great street food snack.

Pie Man – Pie Man sells greasy AF dumpling-like pies.  They’re really good.

Qiu Jia Xiao Juan Mi Fen – The squid noodles from this place are simple, squidy, and amazing.

Stinky Tofu – You can’t go to Taiwan and not try stinky tofu.  If you can get past the smell, it’s actually quite delicious.

Yangmi Red Bean Cake – Bean-filled wheel cakes are an absolute must when you’re in this part of the world.

Yongle Shao Rou Fan – The grilled pork rice from this place is pure comfort food; it’s delicious.
