You know the drill by now; if you see a bunch of people lining up for food, get in that line. I live my life by that code, and it pretty much never fails.
It definitely didn’t fail today. Liu Chia specializes in zhongzi — glutinous rice crammed with various fillings and then wrapped in bamboo leaves and steamed.
They have four choices: pork, peanut, bean curd, and special pork. I have no idea what the difference between pork and special pork is, but I went with special pork (I mean, it’s special — why wouldn’t I??).
Each zhongzi is unwrapped, and then doused with a sweet sauce and sprinkled with chopped cilantro.
It was quite good. The rice was chewy, but still had some texture — it wasn’t mushy. And it was crammed with tender, fatty pork, mushrooms, and chestnuts. It’s sweet, porky, and hearty.
Location: No. 439號, Section 2, Ximen Road, West Central District, Tainan City, 700
How to find it: There’s no English on the sign (though there is an English menu), but it’s right below an animal hospital, so look for the sign with the cartoon cat.
