I recently tried some pretty bizarre stuff at McDonald’s in India, but somehow, I think the salad I tasted in Denmark was the most un-McDonald’s-like thing that I’ve ever had.
Salads are certainly nothing new at McDonald’s — they’ve been on the menu for years, and I don’t think I’ve been to a single location in the world that didn’t have at least one salad.
And yet the Chicken and Hummus Salad at McDonald’s in Denmark just feels different. Featuring hummus, black rice, grilled chicken, edamame, cabbage, and kale, it might be the healthiest thing you can get at any McDonald’s anywhere in the world. There’s no sugary sweet dressing, no chunks of fried chicken, no croutons — just a whole bunch of healthy stuff.
It also comes pre-sealed, so unlike McDonald’s other salads, it isn’t even assembled in the restaurant.
It’s fine, I guess? It feels like something you could buy at the supermarket, but for what it is, it’s tasty enough. The hummus certainly isn’t great, but once you mix it all up, it basically works.
I also tried the veggie burger on a whole wheat bun. This was also fine. I figured this might be one of those newfangled patties that’s trying to emulate meat, but nope — this is a classic veggie patty through and through. It’s nice and crispy on the outside, and vaguely falafel-esque on the inside.
The whole wheat bun basically tastes like a regular McDonald’s bun, only slightly less sweet.
