Some dishes that you eat while traveling are good, but they take you out of your comfort zone. The taste or the texture is unfamiliar, and you need to eat a few bites to even decide what you think of it.
On the other hand, there are dishes like the grilled pork rice at Yongle Shao Rou Fan. It doesn’t ask anything of you but to enjoy it.
The pork is thinly sliced, a little bit sweet, smoky from the grill, and perfectly tender. It’s served with seasoned bamboo shoots and pickled ginger on top of rice. It’s absolutely delicious.
You also get a tasty bowl of miso soup, and a salad consisting mostly of cabbage, cucumber, corn and egg with a thick, slightly sweet dressing.
The pork and rice would be perfectly satisfying on its own; the soup and salad are the icing on the cake.
