There’s something in Taiwan called coffin bread, and it’s essentially clam chowder inside of a crispy, deep-fried piece of bread.
I think it’s pretty obvious that it’s tasty. I mean, you do the math.
There’s a popular stall right around the corner from Anping Fort called Anping Fort Coffin Toast. You can either get a full-sized piece of bread, or a snack size.
You can see them make it in front of you. First they deep fry the bread, then they hollow it out, leaving a crispy lid.
They then fill each piece with cooked carrots, and a ladle of the creamy soup/stew. They cover it up and it’s ready to eat.
The soup is supposed to have seafood; I noticed one piece of squid. Still, it’s rich and tasty, and the crispy, oily bread compliments it well. It’s fairly junky, but it’s good junk.
Location: No. 93, Yanping Street, Anping District, Tainan City, Taiwan 708
How to find it: There’s a big photo of coffin toast on the stall, and the sign has English on it, so it’s easy to find.
