There’s no mistaking a place that sells stinky tofu; you’ll smell it before you see it.

Yes, stinky tofu absolutely lives up to its name — it’s quite pungent.

It’s quite good, however.  Unlike durian, another notoriously stinky food that’s popular in Asia, the flavour is much milder than the smell (durian, on the other hand, tastes even more horrible than it smells — it’s the worst food on the planet and no one will ever be able to convince me otherwise).

I have no idea what this restaurant is called (I can’t find them on Google Maps, which basically never happens here), but they only serve stinky tofu.  They serve it topped with a thick red sauce (I’m honestly not sure what this stuff was) and with a side of very garlicky sweet and sour pickled cabbage.

It’s really good.  The exterior is perfectly crispy, and it’s soft and creamy on the inside.  The flavour is mildly funky and a bit cheesy; if you can get past the smell, there’s actually nothing particularly weird about it.  It’s delicious.

LocationNo. 65, Section 3, Minzu Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 70053 (that’s actually the address of the breakfast place that’s right next door)

How to find it: It’s only a few stores away from A Jiang Stir-Fried Eel Noodles.  Just head to that area and then follow your nose.
