If you’re in Kochi, Fort Kochi is quite scenic and makes for a very easy day trip.  It’s just a quick, cheap ferry ride away.

There’s a ton of historical stuff to see here, mostly thanks to the area’s long history with Dutch colonialism, but even aside from that it’s a really scenic area.

Fort Kochi

It’s a great place to just wander around (aside from the heat, which is fairly intense.  There are a whole bunch of tuk-tuks around if you don’t have the stamina to walk in the sweltering heat).

There’s beaches.

Not to mention the interesting architecture and laid back vibe that permeates the place.

And of course, the history.  Such as: these old steam boilers from the ’50s-era cranes that were used to help repair ships.

There’s St. Francis Church, which was built in 1503 and is one of the oldest European churches in India.

There’s also the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, which was built in the early 1500s and turned into a cathedral in 1558.
