Some Stuff I Ate in Milan

Carbonara from Pasta a Gogo

Pasta a Gogo serves a handful of pasta dishes that they make fresh — it’s mostly a take-out joint, though they do have a couple of tables outside. The woman behind the counter spoke English fluently, so I asked her what her favourite was, and she answered “carbonara” without even a millisecond of hesitation. So that makes ordering quite easy; carbonara it is! And yeah, she’s not wrong to be enthusiastic about it; it’s ultra-rich and creamy, and the crispy pieces of guanciale are salty, porky, and satisfying.

A Great Lunch Deal at Kürtös Ételbár

Kürtös Ételbár is interesting; it’s a tiny little hole-in-the-wall take-out joint (they do, however, have a handful of tables if you want to eat in the restaurant). It also just happens to be connected to (and share a kitchen with) Rosenstein Vendéglő, a much fancier, acclaimed restaurant that serves traditional Hungarian fare.

Which means you can get an affordable lunch from a kitchen that really knows their stuff. It’s a great deal.

Another Great, Affordable Meal at Edessaïkó

I couldn’t resist. After my amazing (and amazingly cheap) first meal at Edessaïkó, I had to come back one more time.

This time, I tried the pork chop in tomato sauce, and was able to try a variety of sides — pasta, rice, fried potato slices, and roast potatoes.

Maybe the Cheesiest Thing I’ve Ever Eaten

There’s a dish they serve in Berlin called käsespätzle, and basically it’s spätzle — a German version of pasta that’s normally served as a side dish — cooked with soft fried onions and a ton of gooey, stringy, super-melty cheese. I think they fry the whole thing around, because there were brown crispy bits of cheese throughout.

Cheap, Delicious, and Satisfying

Rome is generally not the cheapest city ever, but there are bargains to be had. Example: a great little pasta joint called Pastificio. It’s been around since 1918 (it’s always a good sign when a restaurant has that kind of longevity); it doubles as a shop where you can buy pasta to bring home and cook yourself, and starting at 1:00 P.M., as a purveyor of delightfully cheap (and delicious) meals.
