This is going to be a shorter post, because the meal I had at Ayam Goreng Spesial Lombok Idjo was fine — it was perfectly tasty — but nothing about it particularly stood out.
I ordered some rice and a couple of things. The first was the ayam goreng (the Indonesian version of fried chicken). I mean, it’s right there in the name of the restaurant. You’ve gotta order it.
It’s interesting — it’s covered in crispy bits that taste mildly fishy. I’m not sure if actual fish is involved or if they just use the same fryer to cook fish, but it’s tasty enough regardless.
The chicken itself wasn’t the meatiest chicken I’ve ever had, and it was a bit dry, but it was okay. It was nicely spiced and the exterior was fairly crispy.
It comes with a couple of chili sauces on the side — a tasty sambal, and a thick, green one with a pretty decent kick. They both work quite well with the chicken and the rice.
The other thing I tried was the kangkoeng belatjan, which is a veggie dish sauteed with sambal. It’s quite spicy and nicely cooked. It works well with the chicken.
How to find it: The restaurant has a roof, but no walls, so it’s kinda like one big patio? It’s pretty distinctive.
