There’s a Greek dessert called tsoureki — a sweet, bready pastry that’s typically served for Easter, though some places serve it year round.  One of those places: Terkenlis, a Thessaloniki bakery that serves a beloved take on the dessert.

They actually sell two versions, and they’re both a bit more deluxe than the traditional version.  One is covered with a chocolate glaze and filled with chocolate cream, and the other is covered with a white chocolate glaze and filled with chestnut cream.  I went with the latter.

As you might imagine, it’s very, very sweet, but it never feels like it’s too much — the bready pastry is a bit more restrained in its sweetness, which helps balance out the glaze and the filling.

The pastry itself actually reminds me quite a bit of stollen, a German Christmas cake.  It’s dense and hearty, but not dry.

The white chocolate glaze is sticky and sweet, and the chestnut cream is smooth, chestnutty, and delicious.  It’s an incredibly rich dessert.  It’s so good.

How to find it: There are actually a few Terkenlis locations around Thessaloniki.  The sign isn’t in English, but with all of the tasty treats on display in the windows, you’ll know it when you see it.
