Apparently the area around Wenceslas Square — one of the main city squares in Prague — used to be crammed with street vendors selling Czech sausages. But the neighbouring restaurants were unhappy about the stands cutting into their profits, and the city elected to remove most of them.
All that’s left now is Václavsky Gril, which has a couple of locations in the area. So if you’re in the market for a Wenceslas Square sausage, the choice is easy. Václavsky Gril, or Václavsky Gril.
They have a few different types of sausage; I went with the pražská klobása (a.k.a. the Prague sausage), which is a pork sausage studded with chunks of garlic.
It’s decent enough. It’s a bit overcooked — not surprising, considering that it’s pre-cooked and kept warm for serving — and it’s disconcertingly packed with gristle. But mostly, it’s tasty.
It’s garlicky, a little bit sweet, mildly spicy, and slightly smoky, with a nice snappy exterior. I enjoyed it, but at 90 CZK (a bit over five bucks Canadian) it’s a bit on the pricey side for what it is.
