I wasn’t planning on eating a trdelník — also known an a chimney cake, or a chimney cone — here in Prague. They’re available back home, plus it’s pretty clear that they’re more of a tourist thing than anything else. You’ll have a hard time finding them outside of tourist hotspots.
Inside tourist hotspots, on the other hand? They’re everywhere. There’s vendor after vendor everywhere you go. They’re omnipresent. You can’t escape them.
I wasn’t going to get one, but they wore me down. After seeing my millionth stand selling the stuff, I thought, fine, you win, Prague. I’ll eat one.
Interestingly, some of the stands here cook these things over coals, which was part of the reason I decided to try one.
Anyway, it was fine. If you’ve had one of these in any number of cities around the world, then you know what to expect. I’m not sure what — if anything — cooking them over coals accomplishes, but if this tasted any different than the versions I’ve had back home, I couldn’t tell.
It’s basically just dense and bready (and a bit dry), but the sugary exterior was satisfying enough.
Location: Old Town, 110 00 Prague 1, Czechia
How to find it: Go to literally any tourist attraction in Prague, and you’ll find about a dozen vendors selling this stuff.
