Everybody loves pancakes.  And when I say everybody, I mean everybody.  I think pretty much every culture has their own variation on a pancake; Wikipedia has a list of all the different types of pancakes served throughout the world, and it’s quite impressive.

In Hungary, their version is a crepe-like creation called palacsinta.  I tried it at a place called Retró Lángos Büfé, which is one of the few eateries I’ve come across in Budapest that serves street food.

You can get it with any number of sweet fillings; I heard that the cottage cheese was the way to go, so that’s what I ordered.

It’s quite tasty.  The pancake itself is basically like a slightly thicker, chewier crepe.

The cottage cheese filling was interesting; it was creamy, surprisingly tart, and barely sweet at all.  Pretty much all of the sweetness here comes from the mixture of powdered and regular sugar that they sprinkle on top of the rolled pancakes.  I was expecting this to be a sugar bomb, and was pleasantly surprised by how restrained it was.

The slightly chewy pancakes and the creamy filling are a great combination.  It’s a tasty (and filling) breakfast.
