Jose Andres is a celebrity chef who specializes in higher-end Spanish eats.  He has a bunch of restaurants in various States, but I mostly know him from a delightful cooking/travel show called Made in Spain he hosted several years ago.  His enthusiasm for Spanish cuisine was infectious.  I wish he’d do another one.

Pepe at Disney Springs

He has a couple of restaurants in Disney Springs, the shopping area at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.  I went to Pepe, a casual sandwich shop, and the guy behind the counter recommended the Serrano y Manchego sandwich, which comes with Serrano ham, Manchego cheese, and tomato fresco.

Pepe at Disney Springs

It’s a solid sandwich, but it’s nothing special.

The biggest culprit is the bread — I don’t know if it had been sitting under a heat lamp or if it was just overbaked, but it was quite dried out, and the exterior was mouth-rippingly crunchy.  It was a bit crouton-esque.

Otherwise it’s a tasty sandwich, though the ham and the cheese both were what they were, so it’s hard to give the restaurant too much credit for that.  As for the tomato fresco, if I hadn’t seen it I wouldn’t have known it was there; it adds nothing to the sandwich.
