Ayam Geprek is one of those dishes where the gulf between how it looks and how it tastes could not possibly be wider.

It looks absolutely bizarre and completely unappetizing — just a brown melange of chicken scraps and rice.  But it tastes outstanding.

Preksu - Ayam Geprek & Susu

Basically, ayam geprek is a fried chicken dish where the chicken is mashed up with sambal; you wind up with a delicious mix of chicken pieces and crispy bits, all thoroughly mingled with the spicy, vibrant sambal.

At Preksu Ayam Geprek & Susu, they serve it with even more fried goodness — I was told eggplant was the most popular, so that’s what I went with.  The eggplant is sliced super thin and is very throughly battered and fried, which substantially ups the dish’s crisp factor.  It’s a crispy, crunchy bonanza.

Combined with the white rice to cool things down (which you serve yourself from a big drum they have in the middle of the restaurant) it’s an absolutely phenomenal dish.  The crispy/crunchy/meaty/spicy combo is beyond addictive.

I also got a glass of milk (the “susu” in the restaurant’s name), which they have in various flavours.  I was told strawberry and chocolate are the two most popular.  I ordered chocolate, and it was creamy, cold, and sweet.  It was super refreshing, and quite possibly the perfect drink to have with the spicy fried chicken.

How to find it: For some bizarre reason, Google has the address slightly wrong.  It’s actually a bit down the road from where Google says it is, right next to Mandiri Jaya Computer.
