Well, I think it’s about time to pack it in and go home. I mean, what’s the point of continuing this trip now? It’s peaked. The odds of me eating anything as mind-blowing as the gyro I just had from Gyros Aristotelous are pretty much zero.
I’ve had many, many gyros in my life, and apparently they were all absolute trash. Who knew? Comparing this to the gyros I’ve had back home is like comparing a classically trained pianist to a hobo playing the harmonica while farting.
They have a few different options, but I went with the classic and got it as a wrap in a pita.
It was insane how good it was. Whenever you have a wrap like this (shawarma, doner, etc.), you’re hoping for a good balance of crispy bits; this one was pretty much all crispy bits. And yet it wasn’t dry at all — it was a perfect balance of tender and crispy and juicy. It was bonkers.
The flavour was just as good, with a really assertive spicing that still lets the natural flavour of the pork shine through.
And everything else compliments it perfectly. Aside from the pork, it’s topped with thinly-sliced onions, tomatoes, fries, ketchup, and mustard.
The ketchup and mustard, in particular, seem odd, but they totally work. There’s just enough of both of them to add some zip, but not enough for them to even be particularly noticeable; this is not a saucy sandwich. The pork is (justifiably) the star of the show. A deluge of sauce is absolutely not necessary.
The fries are hot and fresh, and compliment the meat perfectly. But of course, everything compliments everything perfectly. It was perfection. It wasn’t just the best gyro I’ve ever eaten, but one of the best things I’ve ever eaten, period.
So yeah. Pretty sure I have to go home now. What’s the point of going on?
