Yeah, that’s right, I said it — a cemetery is a must-visit. I stand by it!
I tend to visit cemeteries when I’m traveling. I know it seems odd (and okay, maybe it is a bit odd), but there’s something about it that I find grimly compelling. It can also help you get a better sense of a place.
But the Monumental Cemetery is something different altogether. Even if you’d never even consider going to a cemetery outside of a funeral, this one is absolutely, positively worth a visit. It’s totally unique in that pretty much every grave has a statue or a sculpture of some sort.
It’s like visiting an art gallery, but outside, enormous, and free.
There are some really striking statues here.
Like, look at this bad-ass grave.
I don’t know what’s going on here, but it looks like something out of an Alien movie.
This one is oddly creepy.
This looks like a twisted up plane propeller. Is this from the plane that killed one of the family members buried here?? I tried looking this up but I couldn’t find anything.
There’s just so much interesting stuff to see here.
I read through several Milan travel guides online, and none of them mentioned this place — I found it while randomly scrolling through Google Maps. I don’t know what everyone’s problem is, because there’s so much amazing stuff to see. I spent a couple of hours here, and didn’t even come close to seeing everything. And it’s free!
