Were the pies from Pie Man the greasiest thing I’ve had in my life? I don’t know; maybe. Were they delicious? Most definitely.
The pies here are essentially circular pan-fried dumplings. They have a few different varieties; the guy behind the counter said that beef and pork are their two most popular, so I tried both (and he spoke perfect English, so ordering was quite easy).
They’re great. The exterior is nice and crispy, and the pastry itself is pleasantly chewy. Both fillings have enough flavour that they don’t feel like they need any kind of sauce.
And of course, as I mentioned, they’re crazy greasy. It’s hard to eat them without making a mess, because they’re absolutely dripping with oil. And yet somehow, they don’t feel too greasy. They kind of reminded me of an oilier version of a soup dumpling.
Location: No. 8號, Zhongzheng Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
How to find it: It’s right down the road from the Hayashi department store. “Pie Man” is in English on the sign, so it’s super easy to find.
