There’s some debate about whether French fries were invented in France or Belgium, but the consensus seems to be that it was probably the latter.

They’re certainly extremely popular here, with places selling them on practically every other block.

There was a place called La Frite Dorée right around the corner from my Airbnb, so on my first night here, I figured, hey — it’s right there.  I may as well go get some fries.

Considering that I picked this place entirely due to its proximity to my Airbnb, it was surprisingly tasty.

La Frite Dorée

I don’t think the fries were the best I’ve ever had — I’ve had a lot of great fries over the course of my life — but they were very good.

They were unsalted, which was unfortunate, but other than that they were pretty great.  They had a seriously crispy exterior — they bordered on too crunchy, but never crossed that line.

And they had a really great, potato-packed flavour and an interior creaminess that was quite delightful.

I ordered mayo for dipping, and it was also above average; it was an absolutely perfect dip for the crispy fries.  This is one thing that Europeans are clearly right about.  Mayo > ketchup.  That’s just a fact.
