I’ve been seeing a lot of ads for KFC Malaysia’s Parmesan Truffle Crunch.  It certainly looks good; I figured I may as well give it a shot.

It was one of the worst meals I’ve had in a long, long time.

I got it as a combo with coleslaw and whipped potato.  The Gula Melaka Pudding looked interesting, so I ordered that as well.

Everything was so bad.

The chicken came with a white, ominously frothy substance all over it.  This was clearly the truffle part of the Parmesan Truffle Crunch, because it basically tasted like it had been doused in truffle oil.

I’ll admit that I don’t particularly care for truffle oil (fun fact: most truffle oil has never actually seen a truffle in its life.  It’s flavoured to taste approximately like truffles, and it’s almost always pretty gross), so maybe trying this was ill-advised from the get-go.

It also came with a tiny little cup of shaved “parmesan cheese.”  I’m putting that in quotes because I tried some of it on its own, and it tasted absolutely nothing like parmesan cheese.  It was waxy and horrible.  It tasted like they shaved off bits of a candle.

The fried chicken was otherwise standard KFC, I guess, only about ten times greasier than normal.  It gushed grease with every bite.

As bad as the chicken was, the sides weren’t any better.

The whipped potato, in particular, was pretty grim.  This is ostensibly supposed to be mashed potatoes, but it didn’t taste anything like any mashed potatoes I’ve had in my life.  The texture was thin and gloppy, and the taste only resembled potatoes if I really used my imagination.

The gravy was even worse.  It tasted like they took the cheapest bouillon cube they could find, added a bit of water to it, and then dumped the resultant slurry over potatoes.  It was sharp and off-putting in a very fundamental way.

The coleslaw wasn’t good, but it was a huge step up from the potatoes.  It basically tasted like the KFC coleslaw back home, only way more oniony, and watery enough to pass as soup.

The pudding was terrible too, because of course it was.  It was so grainy.  It tasted like it curdled pretty badly while they were making it, and then they just decided to serve it anyway.

The dark, sugary sauce was actually pretty tasty, but there was way too much of it.  Towards the end it was basically like eating pure syrup.  Eventually, I had to give up.  It was too sweet.

How to find it: I dunno, man.  Does it matter?
