If an affordable restaurant has been recognized by the Michelin Guide, you can pretty much guarantee that there’s going to be an intense line to get in.  And lo and behold, the Michelin-approved Taiwanese breakfast joint, Fuhang Soy Milk, is fairly notorious for the line that snakes out the door.

It’s impossible to capture that line in a photograph, because it wraps around the building, goes up a flight of stairs, and then into a food court.  But the line moves fast; the ladies behind the counter are a well-oiled machine.  I assumed I was in for an hour of lining up (at least), but I was sitting down with my food in just under a half hour from when I got in line.

Ordering was surprisingly easy; picture menus are provided for us slack-jawed tourists, and the women behind the counter speak enough English to keep things moving along smoothly.

Everything on the menu looks great; I went with the hot sweet soy milk, thick bread with scrambled egg, and the fried dough stick.

The soy milk was delicious; it was smooth and rich, with just the right amount of sweetness.

The thick bread with scrambled egg was an impressive breakfast sandwich.  They bake the bread in a tandoor oven, so one side gets impressively crispy, with a warm, chewy interior and a sesame-seed-infused flavour.  The scrambled eggs, with green onions mixed in, are nicely fluffy, and the absolute perfect accompaniment to the chewy/crispy bread.

The fried dough stick (or youtiao) was the one week spot.  It was mostly quite good, with a very crispy exterior and a fluffy interior.  But it was incredibly greasy.  Every bite is accompanied by a gush of oil.  It’s a bit much.

How to find it: I mean, it’s hard to miss.  Just look for the line.
