Mango sticky rice is a classic Thai dessert, and it’s very, very easy to see why.
Alas, even though Chiang Mai is the home of khao soi, that doesn’t mean that every bowl is going to be great.
Case in point: Khao Soi Islam Restaurant. It’s a well known place, but the khao soi they’re serving is fairly middling.
The roast chicken at SP Chicken is one of those dishes that’s so simple, and yet so crammed with satisfying flavours, that it almost feels like a magic trick. Despite having had roast chicken literally hundreds if not thousands of times over the years, the chicken here still manages to surprise and delight.
There’s absolutely no doubt about it: khao soi is the ultimate Chiang Mai food. Places that serve it are everywhere, and it’s not even a debate — if you can only eat one meal in this city, it’s gotta be khao soi.
I was quickly scanning the menu at McDonald’s during a stopover at the Bangkok airport, and I saw that they had a savoury pie on the menu.
I almost did a double take. Wait, what? Did I just see that? I glanced around to confirm that I was looking the McDonald’s menu. And yep, there it was: the Chicken BBQ Pie.

The other day I plugged my destination into Google Maps, as I am wont to do (no joke: Google Maps single-handedly makes this trip possible, because my navigation skills are nonexistent). The public transit directions seemed to indicate that I take a boat, which seemed odd, but I went with it.
Here’s a very pleasant surprise, and something I hadn’t even heard of until I came to Bangkok: khanom bueang, a Thai dessert that consists of thin, crispy pancakes with a generous spread of a creamy Italian-meringue-like substance, along with other fillings (the one I tried had egg yolk threads, though coconut was also an option).
Funnily enough, one of the best things I’ve eaten in Bangkok isn’t Thai at all — it’s Chinese, from a Michelin-rated restaurant in Bangkok’s Chinatown called Nai-Ek Roll Noodles.
Yep, another country, another visit to McDonald’s. Let’s do this.
