I was quickly scanning the menu at McDonald’s during a stopover at the Bangkok airport, and I saw that they had a savoury pie on the menu.
I almost did a double take. Wait, what? Did I just see that? I glanced around to confirm that I was looking the McDonald’s menu. And yep, there it was: the Chicken BBQ Pie.
I wasn’t planning on eating here, but obviously this changed everything. Even if there are infinite parallel universes, there isn’t a single version of me who wouldn’t order that pie. It’s a savoury pie! At McDonald’s! After visiting locations in over a dozen countries, I thought I had lost the capacity to be shocked by international McDonald’s weirdness. Apparently not.
It certainly looks like a McDonald’s pie (a fried one, of course). As for the taste?
It’s basically a Hot Pocket, albeit one with a tasty, crispy exterior. The filling has a sweet BBQ sauce flavour; it essentially tastes like baked beans, but with chunks of chicken instead of beans. It also has a decent kick to it, which is nice.
Once you get past the novelty of having a salty pie at McDonald’s, nothing about it particularly stands out.
Since I was ordering already, I figured I’d check out the Double Choco Sundae, which turned out to look a lot more impressive than it tastes. It’s topped with hard shell chocolate sauce and brownie chunks, and it wasn’t bad, but for something called “Double Choco,” it wasn’t even remotely chocolatey enough. There probably should have been regular chocolate sauce along with the hardening stuff. Oh well.
