Taichung’s Second Market is a cornucopia of tasty eats; I’ve already had a delicious bowl of porky rice, some really tasty noodles, and now a very hearty breakfast.

There’s a place right on the edge of the market that’s famous for a dish consisting of radish cakes, glutinous rice sausage, and a fried egg, all topped with a very sweet sauce.

It’s a lot of starch, but if you’re looking for a breakfast that’ll seriously fill you up (or if you just want a very tasty way to start your morning), then you need to check this place out.

If you’ve never had a radish cake before, it’s kind of like mashed potato, but with a much thicker, denser consistency.  The version they serve here is quite good, with a bit of crispiness from the griddle.

Then there’s the glutinous rice sausage, which is zero meat, all rice.  It’s basically just plain glutinous rice in a sausage casing, and again, it’s got some exterior crispiness from the griddle.  It’s tasty.

It’s topped with a fried egg with a firm yolk, which works quite well with the radish and the rice.  It’s also topped with the thick and sweet sauce, which is where most of the flavour comes from.

There’s a slightly sweet, slightly vinegary chili sauce on the table, which you should absolutely add to your plate (always use the chili sauce.  Always).

LocationNo. 87號, Section 2, Sanmin Road, Central District, Taichung City, Taiwan 400

How to find it: They’re right on the edge of the market and open to the street.  It’s very easy to find.
