Baked pork chop with tomato sauce on rice is a Hong Kong diner staple, and pretty much the definition of comfort food.
It’s exceptionally simple — it’s plain rice (the version here has some scrambled eggs mixed in) topped with a pork chop. The whole thing is absolutely doused in a creamy tomato sauce and then baked.
No, it’s not the most photogenic dish ever, but what it lacks in looks it more than makes up for in taste.
The version they serve at Mido Cafe is quite good. The pork chop is super tender and cut into bite-sized chunks, the rice is pleasantly greasy and is given extra substance thanks to the egg, and the sauce is seriously creamy with a mild sweetness and a satisfying savoury depth.
I also tried the egg sandwich, which you can probably skip. The egg wasn’t particularly fluffy, the bread was a bit dry, and the egg-to-bread ratio was off — there was way too much bread.
