There’s a bunch of places in Hong Kong that sell skewers of random animal bits; these things make for a pretty great snack.
One of the more well known places is called Fie Jie; they have a fairly dizzying array of skewers you can pick from. It’s not particularly easy to order, however, because there’s almost no English anywhere and a perpetually long line. You don’t want to be the clueless foreigner who holds everyone up with his stupidity.
They do have, however, something called the “big combo” that comes with “squid, large pig offal, and turkey kidney.” That’s what I ordered — but one of the three was sold out, so they subbed in an extra squid instead.
So I wound up with two squid skewers, and… I’m not sure? I think the third skewer was kidney, but don’t quote me on that.
Regardless, it was quite tasty. The squid was tender with just the right amount of chew, and whatever the other thing was, it was good.
It’s served cold, and it comes with a couple of sauces. One is dark and sweet, and the other (which is optional) is a pungent-as-hell mustard sauce. This stuff is basically a horseradish assault directly into your nostrils. It’s great.
Location: 旺角
How to find it: As mentioned, there’s almost no English. Look for the happy-looking cartoon squid on the sign.
