Lebanese Um Khalil is pretty much the perfect spot to hit after working up an appetite by walking around Jerash.

I went with a fairly big group, so we managed to try a lot of stuff, and everything was quite good.

I’m not going to go into everything I tried (again: it was a lot), but here’s some highlights.

The first thing to come is a basket of puffy, piping-hot loaves of pita bread straight from the oven.  These were amazing — they had a perfect amount of light crispiness and a great flavour that’s a bit saltier than your typical pita bread.  Normally pita bread is a bit plain to eat on its own, but I could have just eaten a whole bunch of these and been happy.

There’s the requisite hummus, which wasn’t quite as good as the stuff I had the other day at Hashem, but it was super creamy, with a nice lemony brightness.

There’s mutabbal (a dip made with eggpant and tahini), which had an amazing smoky flavour from the roasted eggplant.

There’s banadurah harrah, a pleasantly savoury tomato dip that I quite enjoyed.

This picture of the kibbeh isn’t great, but this was actually seriously amazing, with a nice light crispy exterior, and a really tender, almost creamy interior that’s really satisfying.

Then there was this amazing dessert, which features a sweet, rosewater-tinged, ricotta-esque filling on a crust made of pistachios.  It was probably my favourite dish of the day, which is saying a lot because everything was quite good.
