McDonald’s in Indonesia might just sell the best thing I’ve ever tasted at a McDonald’s. It’s kind of crazy how good it is.
But that’s dessert. I tried a couple of other things first.
The first thing I tried was the Cheese Steak Burger, which is a burger with cheese sauce on the top and bottom. It also has raw onions, and comes served on an elongated bun (it’s kind of like a McRib in shape).
It isn’t bad at all. The beef patty is pretty decent. It’s dry, and there’s no mistaking it for anything but a McDonald’s patty, but it actually has a fairly satisfying beefy flavour. It also has a dark brown crust the likes of which I don’t think I’ve ever seen on a McDonald’s burger. I mean, look at that:
The cheese sauce is decent enough, with a slightly tangier flavour than you might expect. I wish the onions had been griddled instead of served raw, but then I don’t like raw onions in general, so your mileage may vary on that. Still, it’s a solid burger.
I also tried the Fish Bites, which are basically just little circular balls of fried fish. The batter is pretty tasty and has a decent amount of crunch, which is nice. But they probably could have used a dipping sauce — they’re a bit dry.
For dessert, I tried the Double Choco Pie, and holy crap, that pie. Holy crap.
It’s kind of insane how good it is. It features a chocolate crust surrounding a chocolate filling, and man, it’s delicious. The pie is fried, of course (I think Canada and the States are the only countries in the world stupid enough to debase a McDonald’s pie by baking it instead of frying it), and the exterior is absolutely lousy with that delightful crackly, crispy crunch.
The filling is somewhere between pudding and melted chocolate, and it’s great. It’s not too sweet, and has an intense — but not overwhelming — dark chocolate flavour.
It’s pretty much perfect. I don’t even need to qualify it by saying it was good for McDonald’s. It was just good. So damn good.
