Despite my undying love for ice cream, I’ve been dragging my feet on trying Cremia, the Japanese soft serve that everyone raves about.

Mostly, this is because a cone costs 500 yen, or a bit over six bucks Canadian, which feels like a lot of money for an ice cream cone (though I guess it’s about on par with what you’d pay for  better ice cream back home).

Having eaten it, I’m having a very hard time grousing about the price.  It’s damn good.

Like the soft serve at White Cosy in Sapporo, this turned out to be frozen custard.  And though it’s not quite on White Cosy’s level, this was still some absolutely outstanding ice cream.

Cremia

It’s incredibly rich, with a really satisfying custardy flavour.  It’s also some of the smoothest, creamiest soft serve that I’ve ever had.

Unlike White Cosy, it was maybe a tad too sweet, but that’s a very minor complaint for such a superlative dessert (also, I’m currently in Fukuoka, and White Cosy is way up in Sapporo, so it’s not even a particularly fair comparison).

Even the cone was pretty special, with a much richer, cookie-like taste and texture than your typical cone.  It actually reminded me quite a bit of those butter cookies that come in the blue tin — I haven’t had those in years, but Cremia’s cone flashed me right back, Ratatouille-style.

Location: 1-1 Hakataekichūōgai, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka, 812-0012

How to find it: You can find Cremia all over Japan, but this particular location was in the Apetito Cafe in Hakata Station.
