Among other things, Hokkaido is known for the quality of its local dairy. A nice side-effect of this: ice cream shops are everywhere here.
In particular, soft serve seems to be the ice cream of choice in Sapporo. I don’t think you can go more than a block or two without stumbling onto a place that sells creamy soft serve.
Obviously, as someone who loves ice cream, I find this quite delightful.
One of the many acclaimed ice cream shops here is called White Cosy, and they have a parfait that particularly caught my eye: Yotsuba White Parfait, which features nothing but plain soft serve and whipped cream. The quality of the ice cream itself is front-and-centre here, which is exactly what I was looking for.
It’s absolutely phenomenal. The ice cream turned out to be frozen custard, with a particularly satisfying custardy flavour and the absolute perfect level of sweetness.
It might have been some of the best frozen custard I’ve ever had. I should really stop being surprised that I keep having “one of the best [insert dish here] that I’ve ever had” in Japan. As a food destination, this country is unparalleled.
Even the cream — which was completely unsweetened — was amazing, with an incredible richness and a depth of flavour that I’ve never experienced in whipped cream.
The parfait costs 680 yen (a bit over eight bucks Canadian), which seems pricey for something so plain — until you actually taste it.
