I was a bit wary of trying the Salted Egg Yolk Loaded Fries after the almost comically anemic “loaded” fries I had at McDonald’s in Hong Kong. But I couldn’t resist. Salted egg yolk fries? At McDonald’s? I’ve gotta.
As it turns out, these were basically the opposite of the fries I had in Hong Kong. They more than lived up to the loaded name — I don’t think I had a single dry fry.
The fries are topped with salted egg yolk, along with a white sauce I’m assuming was plain mayonnaise, and something they call “chicken bits.”
The salted egg yolk was delightful — it was rich and creamy, with a mild eggy flavour and a nice salty/savoury hit. Combined with the mayo, it’s an absolutely perfect topping for fries.
The chicken bits turned out to be crispy pieces of chicken skin, which were just as great as you’d hope. They were nice and crispy, and had a very bacon-esque flavour. They worked perfectly with the creamy salted egg yolk.
The fries themselves were standard McDonald’s fries — they could have been fresher, but aside from that this was actually pretty amazing. It was easily one of the best things I’ve ever had at a McDonald’s.
I also tried the salted caramel and chocolate pie, which was fine. I had a hard time not comparing it to the Double Choco Pie from Indonesia, and obviously nothing can live up to the magnificence of that pie.
Still, it was okay. The deep-fried exterior was crispy and amazing as ever, but the filling tasted a bit anemic. Neither the chocolate nor the caramel had a ton of flavour. But it was tasty enough.
