The khao soi from Khao Soi Khun Yai was my third bowl in Chiang Mai, and it’s going to be very, very tough to beat.
This place is frequently named the best khao soi in the city, and all it takes is one mouthful to know why. It’s got everything you’re looking for from a great bowl of khao soi.
The broth has an amazingly intense curry flavour with a serious amount of depth. It’s very spicy, but it never feels overwhelming. And it’s luxuriously creamy without ever becoming overly rich. It’s amazing.
The noodles are nice and chewy, and the crispy fried noodles on top are perfect. They have a great texture and retain their crunch even after being submerged in soup.
And the chicken is great — they use chicken chunks instead of a whole drumstick, but the pieces are from a drumstick and are nicely cooked, so this just makes it easier to eat without sacrificing flavour.
How to find it: They’re a bit hidden away, but they have a sign facing the street, so it’s relatively easy to find.
