Hui Wing Kee was probably my biggest surprise in quite a while.  I hadn’t heard much about this place, other than a reference on a blog to the oyster congee being good (which I didn’t even see on the menu).  Other than that, I could barely even find it online.

It was fairly close to my hotel, however, so I figured sure, why not?  May as well give it a shot.

I ordered the beef brisket with tendon on rice, which I think is their specialty.

It was shockingly good.  It might have been the best thing I ate in Hong Kong, and one of the best things I’ve eaten in a long time.  It was absurdly delicious.

The slices of beef are ultra-tender and perfectly seasoned in a way that amps up their deliciousness, but lets the beef’s natural flavour be the star of the show.  The tendon was equally flavourful, and was melt-in-your mouth tender.

It comes with a rich, au jus-like sauce on the side (the owner was careful to point out that this is “sauce, not soup!” Which was actually quite helpful, because I definitely would have assumed it was soup otherwise).

Dipping the beef into this sauce amps up the flavour from “this is amazing, I love this” to “there’s a fireworks show of flavour in my mouth.”  You can also pour some of the sauce over the rice, which you should absolutely do because it’s delightful.

This is one of those dishes that makes me want to uproot everything and move to a new place, because how am I supposed to live my life knowing that I can never eat this again?

Location: 13 Kwong Wa St, Mong Kok, Hong Kong

How to find it: There’s no English on the sign, but it’s right next door to a Korean restaurant.
