I’ve been seeing carts all over Jaipur serving little bowls of curry with crispy fried bread (a papadum, or papad, I believe) on the side.  Obviously, I had to try it.

Once I ordered, things happened fast.  The guy scooped in some curry, some kind of yellowish sauce, and a handful of onions into a styrofoam container, handed me one of the freshly-fried papadums from the pile, and I was was good to go.

The curry has a mild but satisfying flavour, and some substance thanks to a healthy amount of chickpeas.  Even the onions weren’t bad — the curry was flavourful enough that they really just added a bit of crunch; their flavour is mostly drowned out by the other stuff going on.

And the fried dough was the perfect vehicle for the curry.  It was super crispy, so you basically just break chunks off and then dip it into the curry like chips and dip.

For 20 rupees (or about 40 cents Canadian) it’s hard to go wrong.

Location: Chandpol Bazar Rd, Chandpole, Chandpol, Jaipur, Rajasthan 302001

How to find it: It’s not in Google Maps, so the address above is fairly approximate.  Anyway, these vendors are all over the city, so just do what I did — wait until you see one that looks busy, and then go for it.
