Burger King is the worst. That’s barely even an opinion — that’s just a fact. It’s consistently shoddy in a way that’s quite shocking. So despite my interest in kooky local creations at fast food chains across the world, I’ve never had any particular interest in checking out BK.
Well, I just tried the Halloumi Whopper at Burger King in Cyprus, and yeah — I was right to avoid Burger King. It’s just as shoddy in Europe as it is back home.
The Halloumi Whopper is exactly what it sounds like — it’s a standard Whopper with a thick slice of halloumi cheese (a salty white cheese with a very high melting point, which means you can grill it or griddle it and it’ll hold its shape).
The promotional photos show a golden brown slice of cheese that looks like it’s been fried. The slice on my burger had maybe been placed on the griddle for a few seconds. Because of course. It’s Burger King, after all. Nothing is what it should be.
The rest of the Whopper was business as usual, and was as hastily assembled and misshapen as always (I actually cleaned it up a bit for the photo). It had the usual vaguely bitter flavour from the grill, and was just as dried out and unappealing as you’d expect back home.
I don’t know why I was expecting anything different. I will say that the thick, salty cheese actually does a pretty decent job of covering up the patty’s unpleasant taste, but there’s only so much that a slice of cheese can do.
