Despite being right in the middle of an exceptionally touristy area (it’s maybe a five minute walk from Prague Castle), U Kocoura not only has some decent food, but it’s relatively cheap, too.
It’s nothing too mind-blowing, but if you’re looking for a hearty meal to fill you up while you’re doing some sightseeing, you could definitely do worse.
I tried their specialty, which comes with smoked chicken, cabbage, and ham-stuffed dumplings.
The chicken was pretty tasty, though it tasted more cured than smoked (it did, however, have a very light smoky flavour). Still, it was nice and tender, and it worked quite well with the stewed cabbage.
The dumplings were interesting — they were generously stuffed with big chunks of ham and crispy onion bits, which were a satisfying combo. The dumplings themselves, however, were a bit dry.
Pilsner Urquell, which is brewed in the nearby city of Pilsen, is a pretty big deal in Prague. I think basically every restaurant in the city serves the stuff. Obviously, I had to try a mug. Nothing about it particularly stands out, but it’s a fine lager.
