It recently occurred to me that I was about to leave Japan without having yakitori (skewered meat, traditionally cooked over charcoal). Obviously, that wouldn’t do.
Soup curry is one of those local dishes that you pretty much have to try; it’s a Hokkaido specialty that features a spice-packed, long-simmered soup crammed with veggies and meat, and served with rice on the side.
Trying to find a good place to eat in Siem Reap is weird. Normally, if you google something like “must eat in [insert city here],” you’ll find any number of articles pointing you toward delicious-looking local food.
Well, this is it: my last bowl of khao soi in Chiang Mai. Thankfully, I went out on a high note. Khao Soi Mae Sai is often called the best khao soi in Chiang Mai, and yeah, it’s quite good.
The roast chicken at SP Chicken is one of those dishes that’s so simple, and yet so crammed with satisfying flavours, that it almost feels like a magic trick. Despite having had roast chicken literally hundreds if not thousands of times over the years, the chicken here still manages to surprise and delight.
There’s absolutely no doubt about it: khao soi is the ultimate Chiang Mai food. Places that serve it are everywhere, and it’s not even a debate — if you can only eat one meal in this city, it’s gotta be khao soi.
I was quickly scanning the menu at McDonald’s during a stopover at the Bangkok airport, and I saw that they had a savoury pie on the menu.
I almost did a double take. Wait, what? Did I just see that? I glanced around to confirm that I was looking the McDonald’s menu. And yep, there it was: the Chicken BBQ Pie.
I kinda felt like having chicken rice for my last meal in Malaysia, but I wasn’t particularly keen on walking in the sweltering heat to a restaurant that probably would have been closed thanks to Chinese New Year.
Being in Penang during Chinese New Year’s is a bit of a bummer, because basically everything is closed. There is, however, a pretty huge Indian population here; if you want to eat out, your two choices are Indian or a chain restaurant.
