I think it’s safe to say that Taiwan has breakfast nailed. Between the consumption of delicious noodles first thing in the morning (which is genius) and their amazing breakfast restaurants, we all have to admit that they are the undisputed king of breakfast.
I just went to a pretty great breakfast restaurant (which, as far as I can tell, has no English name) and had a top-notch meal.
There is, of course, no English anywhere on the menu, so I used the old “pull up a picture on your phone” ordering method, which worked like a charm.
You can pour your own drink from the four self-serve containers they have out.
I was hoping for soy milk, but I had to just pick one at random and hope for the best. I actually managed to pick correctly, and I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy to see soy milk flow into a cup.
I ordered a veggie bun, which seems to be their specialty, and an egg crepe (AKA dan bing).
The egg crepe wasn’t quite as good as the one I had in Taipei; that one was made fresh, whereas this one was precooked and waiting to be served. It was still tasty, but it was a bit dry, and the crepe itself was slightly too doughy.
There was, however, this sweet chili sauce on the table, which immediately made the crepe ten times better.
The bun was the highlight; it was super fresh and fluffy, with a really tasty cabbage and carrot filling that had an almost smoky flavour.
And the hot soy milk was sweet, smooth, and satisfying. I think it’s the perfect beverage for this particular meal.
Location: No. 63號, Xinyi Street, East District, Taichung City, Taiwan 401
How to find it: There’s no English anywhere, but you’ll know you’re in the right place when you see the several piles of bamboo steamers.
